Earlier you described your concerns of colorism in the black community. Could you describe that situation and how you feel about it?
It’s the most stupidest thing ever, because it’s basically putting a freakin line down the middle of black people whether you’re light skin or you’re dark skin. No matter if you get pulled over by a cop, you’re gonna be treated as a black person. So there’s no light skin/dark skin, it’s the same thing, it’s just a big problem in the black community. It’s probably one of the most major issues in the black community. I was watching a video of these guys walking around their campus talking about “What do you like, light skin or dark skin?” These dudes is like “Light skin, you know, I can’t mess with no roaches.” Like really? People really believe that type of stuff, so it’s a major problem.
How do you feel about the n-word in popular culture, and white people saying it in popular culture as well? I.E. songs, friend groups, etc.?
I feel like if black people would not be lenient to it, I would think white people won’t say it as much. Because once you hear those songs, you know “n this, n that,” it’s like, you know, it doesn’t give them permission to stay it, but they do. and I don’t think that’s right at all. I feel like, if you say it, and you’re not black, I feel like you know what you’re doing. you know it’s offensive, and then a white person ask me “why can’t i say it?” Even if it’s in a song, it’s history behind it, you know. And I really do think black people should stop saying it too, because it was a name given to us, you know, back in history. It’s not a good name. So I don’t see why you now just taking the “er” off the end is any different then the actual thing.
Who is a major influencer that plays a major role in your thoughts and decision making?
How I go about my day, and how I live.. is God. That’s why anything I do, I pray, and say God lead me, just lead the way. And I know that I’m good as long as I just leave it all up to him. He’s gonna lead me, and if it’s not for me, he will take it away. If it is for me, he’ll give it to you. So it’s just trust in God, that’s the most important thing.
Are you hopeful for what progress there is with being collectively woke as a nation?
People gotta stop being so close-minded, like they gotta be more open-minded. And people have to start really thinking about how you treat others. You know with our generation I feel like it’s gonna get better, it has to. Racism is alive and woke but still, I feel like social media plays a large part in this, and I feel like there’s gonna be something good on social media, so, we gone have to see. Cuz I know I’m gonna raise my kids to love everybody.
What are you excited for your future?
Just being who I really wanna be. You know? Not saying that I’m not myself right now in high school, but there’s some stuff that I’m limited to.
Right, like in high school you still feel like you’re yourself, but then I know a lot of people that discover more about themselves when they’re out of high school, especially in college.
Right, and so I’m just ready to be
