What do you think is one of the most important thing that could help give people of color, especially black women, fair representation in media?
I feel like on TV, we have TWO really like, stations for black women. Like BET and, what else is it, Centric! I feel like if there were more channels it would be a lot better. And then, with cartoons. I was gonna be a cartoon halloween character this year, and I wanted something to relate to. It was about a good four black characters, like cartoon characters, that I could’ve been, and I’m just like? My nieces and nephews watch TV, and they don’t see themselves being represented. So I think TV is one of the big areas where we should see ourselves being represented more.
What is your biggest aspiration in life?
I feel like.. a goal for me, or aspiration, is to really be confident. And I say that, not about being physically in my looks, but confident in things that I’m sometimes afraid to express myself with because of what I might get labeled as. And sometimes I gotta, you know, get that thought outta my mind and say “forget that.” You know, I am who I am. I feel like everybody could be a little bit more confident, you know, so to be confident and FREE, with myself, that’s my aspiration.
Describe yourself in a few words, and can you please explain what those words evoke about you?
Creative, number one. I think outside the box all the time. As you can see, in art class, you know when I get so excited, when I get a thought in my head, I can barely get it out. So I draw it out, I talk about it, you know, it’s just creative. A second word for me I would say.. I wouldn’t say careless, but careless as in free. It’s kind of hard to explain. Because, you know, I gotta get those areas that I’m not as confident in, but I’m pretty free-minded, and just very open minded to a lot of situations. A third one, I would say, I would say classy. Thats the one thing I always look at. I look at a lot of people these days, like a lot of black women, and it’s not a lot of class, and I feel like that’s the one thing no one ever teaches anymore. You know I feel like that’s a old phrase that doesn’t get brought up anymore, like “slay,” but I think classy is me.
