Creating an essence of yourself is no easy task, and it certainly does not happen in two snaps. Building one’s self to become a role model that embodies style and character takes time. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean a long time. Embracing style, being aware of your surroundings, and aspiring for major goals creates character, allowing the embodiment of an iconic-worthy figure to form.
How does incorporating style within your everyday life play a role in how you view yourself as a person?
Well.. I think style has a lot to do with it, because you gotta be different. You know? If you didn’t have style, you would be just like everyone else.
Are you usually all about the majestical glam that you’re in right now, or do you have different parameters of fashion that you prefer to stay into?
I go ALL over. Like, I’m just fashionable with everything. You know, I have a wide variety of different things.
You got the whole table set out!
Yeah! A big variety. Whatever I’m feeling that day, or if I’m feeling like something, I’ll just do it, you know? It’s not just one particular thing.
Right, you don’t feel that you have to just stick in a specific lane, just because it’s what you usually do.
Solange Knowles once said “I'm a lot more interested in style than fashion - style is what makes us who we are.” Each person’s specific style illustrates a story about themselves. For Mariah, her’s is telling of the creative freedom she expresses daily. She is constantly remolding herself to stretch boundaries and discover new aspects of fashion and wearable art. By expanding and challenging expectations that white American culture may push upon black America, she encourages the confidence of other black women alike through her style.
